UK Coal has four main divisions as follows:

Deep Mining

At the end of 2006 the Group operated five deep mines, located in Central and Northern England, including Maltby Colliery which was sold in February 2007. The Group has proven reserves of around 40 million tonnes at its four ongoing mines and employs some 2,900 people in deep mining.

Surface Mining

UK COAL has seven active surface mines and planning consent to mine a further site. Surface mine reserves of 4.1 million tonnes are already granted for mining and 10 million tonnes of reserves are in the application process or planned for application within the year. Surface mining reserves available for planning total approximately 97 million tonnes.

UK COAL has established its own power generation business, which utilises waste gas from mines to generate electricity, and it is actively pursuing the development of alternative power generation opportunities, including wind farms.

Land & Property

Land & Property

UK COAL owns some 47,500 acres (19,222 hectares) of predominantly agricultural land. Within this, some 2,650 acres have been identified as offering prime prospects for development over the short to medium term into a mix of business park, residential, distribution and community developments.
