UK COAL's Corporate Commitment
In July 2000 the DETR re-launched their Making a Corporate Commitment Campaign, (MACC2) and invited companies to participate. UK COAL PLC is proud that it was the first industrial organisation to make a pledge under this scheme just a few days later, when it volunteered to increase methane utilisation at its collieries by 135% from its 1998 level by 2005. It has subsequently exceeded that target with the introduction of engines to burn methane extracted from mines and to convert that gas into electricity.
In May 2004 the UK Government decided to bring the scheme to a close. UK COAL will continue to reduce methane emissions through its participation in the UK Emissions Trading Scheme.
