Over 95% of the coal produced by UK Coal is supplied to the power generating sector with the remaining coal sold to the domestic, industrial and coking markets.
Our main customers are the large generators such as Drax, EDF, E.ON and Scottish & Southern.
There are many advantages for generators using coal mined in the UK:
The vast majority of sales in this sector are to five power stations – Drax, Ferrybridge, Cottam, West Burton and Ratcliffe. All of these stations are fitted with flue-gas de-sulphurisation equipment (FGD) which is a technology used to remove sulphur dioxide (SO2) from the exhaust flue gases.
UK Coal produces a small tonnage (less than 200kt per annum) of coking coals from surface mines. This is sold to Tata Steel for use in their coke ovens in Scunthorpe and Port Talbot. Coking coal is an essential raw material for blast furnaces used for steel making and there is no effective substitute.
