The health and safety issues in UK COAL are characteristic of a potentially high risk industry.

These risks range from the established hazards of operating deep mines, surface mines, labour contracting, a solid fuel heating business and associated support services to power generation and the office environment.

Some risks are specific to individual parts of the business whilst others are group wide. In all cases, these risks are subject to specific policies and procedures, management systems and control measures.

UK COAL are continually improving the competence of all management levels via the NEBOSH Certificate. This gives staff a thorough understanding of the principles and importance of managing health and safety on a day to day basis.

In addition to performance monitoring arrangements within individual businesses, report and feedback mechanisms exist to provide regular independent reviews of health and safety risk management arrangements, with internal controls across the Group in accordance with Turnbull requirements and HSG65, Successful Health and Safety Management.
