Arkwright
Work on the mining project started in July 1993 as the solution to a problem of methane gas leaking from old ironstone workings into the homes of residents of the former Arkwright Village. Residents were re-housed in a “new village” of some 230 properties some 400 yards from their former homes. The £20m cost was met from proceeds from the recovery of over four million tonnes of coal which was completed in 2005.
