Hicks Lodge Extension
The site is located to the east of Donisthorpe in the District of North West Leicestershire.
Planning permission was granted by Leicestershire County Council in January 2000. A total of 900,000 tonnes of coal was extracted from the 117 ha site over a period of 4.5 years.
Benefits Provided by the Scheme
•44 hectares of new woodland and ecological habitats including wetland areas, species rich grassland, contributing towards the National Forest
• Planting some 50,000 new broadleaved trees
• 3.4 km of new hedgerows and the creation of ponds and wetlands
• The creation of 4.3 kilometres of new rights of way
• The provision of playing fields for the local school as part of the restoration
• The provision of a Trust Fund to be set up to provide additional environmental improvements
• The gifting of Newfield Colliery and Bramborough Farm clay pit areas of ecological interest to Leicestershire County Council
• The provision of a community fund to support projects in the local community.
