Around five million tonnes of coal were recovered from this site over a ten year period. Coaling operations began in July 1995 on the site of what was a former coke and steel works, reclaimed for amenity and commercial use as part of a £20m clean-up project. Up to nine seams of coal laying close to the surface were recovered, with progressive restoration to create nature and wetland habitats and leisure amenities to attract visitors and wildlife.

The already successful Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) being developed to attract high tech engineering companies is now moving into it's second phase which releases a another 80 acres of development land . Infrastructure works on Highfield Commercial a further 50 acres of employment land is due to start early next year which will be followed by a "new community" of around 3,600 homes to be developed over the next 15 to 20 years.
