Sharlston Colliery
Planning permission for the reclamation of this 60 hectare site was granted by Wakefield Council in 2007 with operations due to commence in the autumn of the same year. In addition to a contamination clean-up operation of the former colliery site, the company hopes to recover some 400,000 tonnes of coal, 100,000 tones of high grade fireclay and some 377,000 tonnes of highly sort red shale.
The former colliery site, which has been derelict since 1993, will be fully restored within a 27 month period to include a mixture of residential land, heath land, agriculture, woodland, wetland and will provide for a significantly improved public rights of way network.
