Stobswood
The current Stobswood Surface mining scheme commenced its operations in 1990 and extends to some 593 hectares of land. Planning permission was subsequently granted by Northumberland County Council in 2006 for an extension to the site referred to as ‘North Stobswood revised’ which began the recovery of a further one million tonnes of coal and some 57,000 tonnes of ancillary fireclay in the summer of the same year.
The restoration details for the extension provide for the planting of 9 hectares of woodland, 13ha of species rich hay meadow, 2.7ha of open water, 1.2ha of marshland, 11ha of seasonal wet pasture, 1 kilometre of new hedgerow and 4.6km of new public rights of way but, also enhanced the original site restoration proposals now including 98.5ha of woodland, 40ha of species rich hay meadow, 7 ha of open water and 22.5km of new hedgerow.
Coaling at North Stobswood Revised is expected to be completed by the end of 2008 and both sites will be fully restored by the end of 2009.
